Our primary distinction comes from being an independent veterinary surgery. In the UK, there are two main models of running a veterinary practice: independent and corporate-owned.
While we have never met a vet who didn’t want the best outcome for their patients, we’ve certainly seen the limitations on the care they could provide within corporate structures. Most veterinary corporate business models operate similarly to other industries, with a few directors, various boards, regional and local managers, practice managers, and a large number of shareholders. These surgeries operate under a massive umbrella, benefiting from deals with equipment and medicine suppliers. Corporates usually have their own PR, HR, analytics, and other departments run by people who may not fully understand the veterinary profession but are good with numbers.
When it comes to deciding the best course of treatment for your pet, some corporations are governed by predefined, rigid policies and procedures. This business model means some corporate vets are influenced by measures such as shareholder profit. In rare instances, business targets might impact care decisions, such as the quality of medication or standard operating procedures. This structure may also slow down the speed at which your pet is treated, as certain decisions may require permissions from head office, delaying your pet’s treatment.
We’ve heard of corporates blocking certain products, making them unavailable for vets to order, even though they could be the most suitable medication for your pet.
As independent vets, we do not follow any corporate policies written by non-clinical staff. We can act on the spot and make the best decisions for your pet without unnecessary delays. Competing with such large companies can feel like the mythical fight of David and Goliath. They will never be beaten on deals and budgets for medicine or marketing campaigns. But we truly believe that word of mouth and bringing back the level of care you and your pet deserve will compensate for the minimal marketing budget we can afford.
We are a group of professionals you might know from your local veterinary surgeries and referral centres. We share the same ethos, and your pet will always be our top priority. Our mission is to restore the trust that has been lost due to questionable changes within the profession in the last 10 years.
